RVing With Pets Safely
There’s nothing like an RV to elevate your camping trip into a camping experience, but can it really be complete unless you bring the whole family along? And that doesn’t just include the human ones! We here at Minneapolis Trailer know bringing pets on your RV camping trip can be a blast, so we wanted to share some tips for RVing with your pets safely below. Keeping Track of Them
Your pet should be fine to wander the camper once you’re all set up, but if you want to bring them outside, you’ll need to be careful to keep track of them. The easiest way to do that is with leashes, crates, and other carriers. For instance, many cat owners have found their kitties enjoy being in special backpack carriers with windows so they can enjoy nature with some separation.
Unless your pet grew up on the streets or has experience and training with the wilderness, it’s just not safe to let them roam around. Moreover, if you’re at a popular campsite and there are other parties nearby, you don’t want your pet intruding on their trip without their invitation. They may be terrified of or allergic to your pet, or both.
On the Road
Your pet should always ride in the same vehicle you are, so if you’re towing your RV, the pet should be in the tow vehicle with you, never in the camper. Make sure they’re secured in a crate or carrier, or behind a safety net. If you’re in an accident, it’s better for them to be confined than to fly around the vehicle, and a moving pet can be a distraction to the driver. Remember to take rest breaks for them.
In Case of Separation
If your pet does manage to get loose, you’ll want to make sure they’re properly tagged and chipped. A simple collar with tags will do most of the work, so long as you include your address and phone number on them, but collars can come off. A microchip implanted between your pet’s shoulder blades can tell vets and anyone else with the tech to read it your name and contact information.
Routines & Comfort
If your pet has a daily routine, it’s important to help them keep up with it. That includes feeding times, walks, medicines, etc. You should also make sure they’re getting all the comforts and sustenance they would at home, so bring along their usual food (preferably more than you think you’ll need, just in case), plenty of clean water for them to drink, etc. You should also ensure your RV has a cool, quiet, dark place for them to nap comfortably.
